UGG's roots are to be found in the sandy beaches of Byron Bay (Australia).
At the end of the '60s, long stays in Byron Bay pushed surfers to try and experiment with different ways to keep their feet warm and dry between a ride and another. The best solution is found in the sheepskin that is particularly comfortable and warm. In 1978, Brian Smith, founder of UGG, landed in Southern California with a bag full of sheepskin boots and the belief that their sale could give impetus to a profitable business.
In those years the beaches in Southern California are the epicenter of a relaxed, casual atmosphere and a modus vivendi that Brian felt was tailor-made for his brand. Success was in fact immediate and by mid 1980, the UGG brand becomes a symbol of the laid back and relaxed lifestyle of Southern California, making its way across the Californian coast, from San Diego to Santa Cruz.
Today, UGG boots have gone way beyond the beaches, reaching large or small cities, mountains and all levels of society. At the end of the '90s some celebrities of the fashion world started wearing UGG boots, making then a casual style icon.
The success of these boots among the pop and film stars was indescribable, a contagious must-have which involved, among others, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz, Eva Longoria, Miley Cyrus, Megane Fox, Kate Moss, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Aniston, Paris Hilton, Sharon Stone, Charlize Theron.
The UGG collections also feature slippers, clogs, and many varieties of boots, continually reinterpreted in shapes, colours and materials.
